RED MILLS Special: Who wins the LGCT Grand Prix of Cairo?

The LGCT has landed in Cairo, and the Grand Prix runs in front of the Giza pyramids. Charlotte, Sam Watson and Emma Blumenkrantz preview the first CSI5* in Egypt in this Red Mills episode. Ben Maher brings Point Break back for his first five-star since the Aachen World Championships. Germany sends five of the eight highest-rated horses in the field. Peter Devos and Casual DV Z are still chasing a win after a season of near misses. The hosts close by building their Cairo podiums.

Key Discussion Points

  • Point Break returns. Ben Maher's stallion jumped a CSI3* in the Netherlands before flying to Egypt. He sits joint fourth in the world on Elo. Sam walks through his season: second at Windsor, a long-awaited win in Rotterdam and top five in Falsterbo.
  • A changeover at the top? King Edward has held world number one for a long time. James Kann Cruz is now one Elo point behind him.
  • German dominance. After Aachen team gold, Spruce Meadows and the Barcelona final, Germany arrives in Cairo with Daniel Deusser, Marcus Ehning and Coolio, Christian Kukuk and Checker, and Sophie Hinners. The hosts debate Otello's unorthodox style against his results: second at the World Cup Final, sixth at the World Championships. Checker no longer jumps championships and has already won the Grand Prix qualifier in Cairo.
  • First or last? Sam puts Charlotte and Emma on the spot. In a four-horse jump-off, both want to go last. In a ten-horse Geneva-style jump-off, both want to go first. Charlotte uses the Highlands Cup to explain why an early clear can land a podium in a big jump-off.
  • Five-star jumping in Africa. The first CSI5* Grand Prix on African soil was in Rabat two years ago, won by Anastasia Nielsen as the only double clear. CSI5* El Jadida, Cairo and CSI5* Rabat now run on consecutive weekends.
  • Casual DV Z. Peter Devos's homebred mare is 11, was produced by his wife, and he rode her dam. She has been second in the LGCT in Rome and Valkenswaard and won team silver in Aachen with Belgium. She already has offspring aged seven, five and four.
  • The Egyptian angle. Abdel Saïd, born in Egypt and now riding for Belgium, comes in off team silver in Aachen and LGCT wins in Cannes and Rome. Nayel Nassar and Sameh El Dahan give the home crowd plenty to shout for.
