This is a consistent, high-performing generation. But they're not consistent in the same way, and that's where it gets interesting.</p>

<h2 dir="ltr">So why are these three the ones to watch?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">Because the record says so. Across 4*-L and 5*-L competition, these three horses have 34 completions from 37 starts, 16 wins, and 28 top-five finishes. Each has won at the highest level. Each has had a very public bad day. But taken as a whole, the body of work is remarkable and the differences between them come down to profile rather than quality.</p>

<h2 dir="ltr">Who's likely to lead after dressage?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">Chipmunk tends to set the tone. His long-format dressage average sits around 20.8, with London just behind on 23.1 and Lordships a little further back on 24.6. At Paris, <strong>Laura Collett</strong> and <strong>Michael Jung</strong> were producing tests in at the 17 mark. That's elite-level dressage and the kind of score that can put a result to bed before the cross country even starts.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Graffalo is perfectly capable of going into the low 20s, but he doesn't regularly open on an 18. And if the leaders are sitting on 18 or 19 while he's on 25, that's a seven-mark gap. Seven is a problem. Four is something you can work with.</p>

<h2>Why does four marks matter so much specifically?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">Because one rail in show jumping costs you four penalties, and at championship level, two rails is genuinely unusual. Chipmunk has only had two rails down three times in his long-format career. London's double-rail moment came across multiple rounds at Tokyo. The realistic base case for both of them is a clear round or one fence down.</p>
<p dir="ltr">So if Graffalo is within four marks after dressage and he jumps clear while one of the others has a rail, the leaderboard flips. If he's seven back, a single rail doesn't move the needle enough. That's why what happens in the dressage arena on day one is, in a very real sense, deciding the championship.</p>

<h2 dir="ltr">What about cross country? Can anyone pull away there?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">All three are exceptional&nbsp; in the cross-country phase. Graffalo has the cleanest pure jumping record of the three at around 90% clear, with Chipmunk on 79% and London on 77%. Each has had one very memorable championship moment&mdash;Tokyo, Pratoni, Paris&mdash;but across 37 combined starts, there are only three non-completions. Time faults, conditions, the weight of the occasion - these things could all play a role. But statistically, a dramatic cross country swing is unlikely. Which, again, puts the pressure back on dressage.</p>

<h2 dir="ltr">Is Graffalo genuinely the best show jumper of the three?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">The numbers suggest yes. His average show jumping penalties per run in long format is 0.8. London's is 2.2, Chipmunk's is 3.1. He leaves rails up. That's not nothing. In fact, at a championship where everything else is tight, it might be everything. If he arrives at the show jumping within touching distance, he's extremely hard to beat.</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">Does age come into it?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">Chipmunk and London will be 17 and 18 in 2026; seasoned, experienced, comfortable in a big atmosphere. Graffalo is younger. Experience helps you handle the noise; youth helps you handle the mileage. But unless something unexpected happens on cross country day, this championship is probably going to come down to margins rather than fitness or freshness.</p>

<h2 dir="ltr">So how does it actually play out?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">It depends almost entirely on where everyone sits after dressage. If Graffalo is six or seven back, he needs something to go wrong for the others and that's not a position you want to be chasing from. If he's within three or four, everything is live going into the final day and that's when his show jumping record becomes a genuine weapon.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Chipmunk and London win championships from the front. Lordships wins them from the finish. The question is simply whether he can stay close enough through the first two days to make day three his.</p>

<p>For close to three years, one name has been synonymous with the summit of the EquiRatings Elo rankings: King Edward. Henrik von Eckermann's extraordinary gelding pushed the boundaries of what this sport's data had ever seen, reaching an all-time high Elo rating of 821, a number that no horse in the history of the rankings has surpassed. His reign wasn't just long; it was historic. King Edward became the benchmark against which every other horse in the world was measured. But after more than 12 months without competing at CSI4*/CSI5* level at the 150cm class or higher, the Swedish star has dropped out of the active EquiRatings system and with him, the longest-standing number one spot in recent memory.</p>

<h3>What Is the Elo Rating?</h3>
<p>The EquiRatings Elo rating is the most rigorous performance metric in show jumping. Every horse begins its international career with a starting rating of just over 500, and from there, every result either adds to or subtracts from that number depending on who they beat and who beats them. Think of it like a trading system: in each competition, a horse gives points to the horses that finish above it, and takes points from those it finishes ahead of. The net result is a gain or a loss, and over time, that number becomes a precise reflection of how a horse truly performs against elite-level opposition.</p>
<p>Crucially, the Elo doesn't just reward winning, it rewards quality of winning. Beating a field of high-rated horses earns far more than topping a weaker class, which means easier courses and lower-quality opposition can never artificially inflate a horse's rating. A horse rated over 775 has demonstrated the ability to go clear in 58% of its CSI5* 160 rounds, compared to just 7% for those rated under 500. That gap in predictive power is exactly why the Elo is so valuable not just for rankings, but for team selection and championship preparation.</p>

<p>With King Edward's departure, jumping finds itself in a rare and compelling situation: not one, but two horses share the title of the world's top-rated horse. Point Break, ridden by Great Britain's Ben Maher, and United Touch S, piloted by Germany's Richard Vogel, both sit at an Elo rating of 785. It is a fitting reflection of a sport where the margins at the very top are razor-thin: two genuinely world-class horses, arriving at the same peak by entirely different routes.</p>
<h2>Point Break: Quietly Unassailable</h2>
<p>Point Break's case is built on sustained excellence. The 13-year-old gelding's last recorded appearance on the international stage was at the Stockholm CSI4* in late November 2025 and as of yet, no plans for his return to competition have been publicly announced. Yet despite that silence, his Elo rating of 785 has held firm at the very top of the rankings. It speaks volumes about the level of performance he banked during his most recent competitive stretch that he can sit joint-top of the world without having set foot in a ring in 2026. Whether Ben Maher brings him back this spring, this summer, or beyond, remains one of the great unknowns hanging over the show jumping world right now and his Elo will be watching whenever he does.</p>
<h2>United Touch S: The Form Horse of 2026</h2>
<p>If Point Break's case rests on a legacy of excellence, United Touch S is making his argument in real time. Richard Vogel and the 14-year-old stallion arrive at the joint summit on the back of a breathtaking run of form at the sport's most prestigious venues. In January, they delivered a masterclass to win the CSI5* Longines FEI Jumping World Cup of Basel, crossing the line in 40.12 seconds in a jump-off that wasn't close. Then came 's-Hertogenbosch in March and the grandest stage of all. Vogel set the standard in the &euro;1,000,000 CSI5* Rolex Grand Prix of The Dutch Masters, clocking 39.42 seconds that no rival could match, earning his second Rolex Grand Slam Major title. Back-to-back wins at the top level, it is the form of a true world number one.</p>
<h2><br>What Comes Next?</h2>
<p>The question now is whether this joint reign holds, or whether one of these two horses pulls clear. United Touch S is in the prime of the spring season and still competing at the highest level, while Point Break's return to the ring remains the great unknown of 2026. The Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping campaign is already underway for Vogel and his stallion and every result from here will shape the story at the top of the rankings. One thing is certain: jumping's new number ones have a lot to live up to. The bar was set at 821.</p>

The King Steps Aside: A New Chapter in the Jumping Elo ratings

<p class="font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]">Every junior and young rider stepping onto the start box at a European Championship has the same dream. The medal. The podium. The moment that makes years of early mornings and endless schooling sessions worth it. But wanting it and knowing how to get there are two very different things.</p>
<p class="font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]">Yet, most of the athletes who reach those podiums couldn't tell you exactly why it worked when it did. But the data can. It shows what a medal-winning performance actually looks like, what metrics a horse needs to be hitting coming in, and how much overperformance on the day is typically required to close the gap. That clarity is something most combinations are competing without but it doesn't have to be.</p>

Here's what the data tells us about what it takes to win at Junior and Young Rider European level - and what it means for how you source horses and prepare.</p>

<h2 dir="ltr">Junior Europeans: Where It Starts</h2>
<p dir="ltr">Based on results at the Junior European Championships (CCI2*L) from 2015 to 2025, the average individual podium score is&nbsp;<strong>26.8</strong>. In ten championships, the highest finishing score from any podium position has been <strong>30.2 </strong>- a number that would only get you a bronze at Young Rider level on average. That gap alone tells you how different the two competitions are.</p>
<p dir="ltr">To make the top 10 at Juniors, you need to finish around <strong>31.3</strong> on average, and the highest top-10 score on record is <strong>37.3</strong>. The competition is tight, and the margins between the podium and the pack are significant.</p>

<p dir="ltr">The <em><strong>most important takeaway</strong> </em>is that the top-placed Junior competitors tend to significantly <em><strong>outperform</strong></em> their pre-competition metrics on the day.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Add together the average<strong> 6RA</strong> (average dressage score from the horse&rsquo;s last 6 international tests) and <strong>SJ6</strong> (average number of show jumping faults from the horse&rsquo;s last 6 international rounds) for Junior medallists, and you'd expect a two-phase score in the low 30s.&nbsp;But the average finishing score for the podium is <strong>26.8.</strong></p>
<p dir="ltr">That's a gap of roughly six points which are not accounted for by incoming form, but by <strong><em>overperformance </em></strong>on the day <em>(keep reading for a real championship example of this!).</em>&nbsp;By the time you reach 11th to 20th, competitors are finishing very close to their two-phase average. Beyond 20th,the majority of combinations are underperforming.</p>
<p dir="ltr">There's important context behind why those swings are so pronounced at junior level. A Six-Run Average (6RA) sounds like a meaningful sample, but for a junior combination it may only cover 18 months of international competition and a lot can change in 18 months for a 16 or 17-year-old. They can improve dramatically across a single season in a way a senior professional may not.</p>
<p dir="ltr"><em><strong>Improvement is real and it's expected.</strong></em> But that doesn't change what the data shows. Even accounting for genuine development, what separates the medallists is still a <em><strong>big </strong><strong>performance</strong></em> on the day.</p>

<h2 dir="ltr">Young Rider Europeans: Stepping Up</h2>
<p dir="ltr">Move up to the Young Rider European Championships (3*L level) and the benchmark shifts considerably. Individual gold is consistently a sub-30 finish, with the average winning score remaining consistent&nbsp;over the years.&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">Bronze trends around <strong>33.3 </strong>regardless of the era. And if you can finish sub-40, you're generally in the top 10, meaning for a large chunk of the field, a top-10 finish is within reach.</p>

<p dir="ltr">When you look at the incoming metrics &mdash; the form data horses bring into the competition &mdash; the two key differentiators for horses finishing in the top two positions are stronger dressage (<strong>6RA)</strong> and higher <strong>Elo ratings,</strong> with the average Elo for gold and silver medallists coming in above 500. XC form is strong and relatively level across the top 10, meaning cross-country execution is broadly competitive at this level and the medal race is largely decided in the other phases.</p>

<h2 dir="ltr">What This Means When Sourcing and Preparing a Horse</h2>
<p dir="ltr">The common assumption is that to win a medal at Junior or Young Rider Europeans, you need a horse already performing at that level. A horse posting sub-30 dressage scores and jumping records that match what the podium looks like. The data says otherwise.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The key phrase is<em><strong> within range. </strong></em>Because medal winners regularly outperform their recent form by five, six, seven points or more on championship day, you don't need a horse whose 6RA already sits at 26. You need a horse within an overperformance range of 26 - capable of hitting that on a very good day, even if their average is closer to a 30 or 32.</p>
<p dir="ltr"><strong>Cathal Daniels</strong> and <strong>Rioghan Rua</strong> are a clear illustration. In the build-up to the 2014 Junior Europeans at Bishop Burton, <strong>Rioghan Rua's </strong>recent dressage scores had been trending in the mid-to-high 30s. At the championship, they produced a <strong>27.8</strong> &mdash; over <strong>6 marks better than their 6RA</strong> at the time &mdash; on the way to a second-place finish. That performance then normalised back to their pre-competition range at the next event. The <em><strong>overperformance</strong></em> was real, and it was decisive.</p>

What Does It Really Take to Win a Medal at Junior and Young Rider Europeans?

<p>Three riders, three horses, three huge moments. We take a look back at those moments ahead of the season finale - the 2026 Rolex US Equestrian Open CSI5 Grand Prix. These three will likely all be contenders again on Saturday night but so will many others. The season isn't done writing its story just yet.</p>

<h2>Vogel: Perfection by the Numbers</h2>
<p>The Week 5 CSI5* Grand Prix at the 2026 Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington was won by Richard Vogel (GER) riding Gangster Montdesir in the $500,000 Fidelity Investments Grand Prix. Richard Vogel is generally considered as one of the most talented riders in the sport and it seems that in Gangster Montdesir he has found his next superstar.</p>
<p>Gangster is just 10 years old, but he has been nothing short of immaculate at CSI5* 1.60m: five rounds, five clears, and two wins. This pair were fourth at Week 7 (one down in the jump-off). A young horse with a perfect record paired up the fast and talented rider, and a recent winner of this class. It would be no surprise if they win again this weekend.&nbsp;</p>
<h2>Ward: Home is Where the History Is</h2>
<p>Week 7&rsquo;s CSI5* Grand Prix was won by McLain Ward riding High Star Hero in the $500,000 Modon CSI5* Grand Prix. No rider in the last 15 years has won more often at Wellington than McLain and this is the week he often shines. This victory with High Star Hero was his fourth WEF Week 7 Grand Prix win since 2010, following previous successes in 2016, 2017, and 2020.</p>
<p>Together, Ward and High Star Hero have now won three CSI5* 1.60m classes and if they make the jump off on Saturday will have a big chance. If there is one rider who knows how to perform when Wellington asks its biggest questions, it is Ward.​ He is the most recent US rider to win the class (2019) and will be desperate to repeat the trick.&nbsp;</p>
<h2><br>Kenny: A Partnership Finding Its Peak</h2>
<p>Week 9&rsquo;s CSI5* Grand Prix was won by Darragh Kenny (IRL) riding Eddy Blue in the $500,000 Bainbridge Companies CSI5* Grand Prix. Darragh Kenny and Eddy Blue are one of Ireland&rsquo;s top rated combinations based on huge consistency and clear rounds and high placings in tough fields. The only surprise is that they haven't won more.</p>
<p>This victory was only their second CSI5* Grand Prix/World Cup win together, (following a London World Cup triumph in 2024). They like it here and before this win had finished on a WEF Week 7 podium last year. They are in form and likely to be in the jump off. What happens from there, we will see.&nbsp;</p>
<h2><br>A Decade of Week 12 Champions</h2>
<p>Three champions made and one more still to come - the last and most coveted title Wellington &nbsp;has to offer: the Rolex US Equestrian Open Grand Prix. The crown has gone to Germany in four of the last 5 years and with Richard Vogel and Christian Kukuk returning, the trend might well continue.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Christian Kukuk is the only rider to win it back-to-back in that span, taking both with his Olympic gold medal partner Checker 47 in 2024 and 2025. Last year's win also ensured he became the first ever winner of the US Equestrian Open. &nbsp;<br>McLain Ward is the only two-time winner in the period across different horses &mdash; HH Carlos Z in 2015 and HH Azur in 2019 &mdash; while the full list of champions includes Ben Maher, Sergio Alvarez Moya, Margie Goldstein-Engle, Dani G. Waldman, Daniel Deusser, Ashlee Bond, and Richard Vogel.</p>
<p>Of the 9 winning riders across that span, just one had never previously won a CSI5* 1.60m Grand Prix or World Cup before claiming this title. Margie Goldstein-Engle and Royce in 2018 are the exception that proves the rule. Every other champion arrived with that experience already banked. This weekend's CCI4*-S at Carolina Horse Park carries an Elo Field Strength rating of 615 - the highest ever recorded at this venue. Very few events have topped it, coming in as the sixth-highest of any CCI4*-S staged on US soil on record.</p>

And while Carolina is no stranger to strong competition &mdash; featuring 3 of the top 10 fields &mdash; this is by far the strongest it has ever been.</p>
