<p dir="ltr">The US brought their first team to Aachen in 2013 and in 2015, they landed on the Aachen podium for the first time. They now have <strong>five total podium finishes out of their 10 team appearances.</strong></p>

<p dir="ltr">Though you may remember the surprise when they didn&rsquo;t win in 2023 - despite having three combinations in the top six - <strong>the closest the US actually came to team gold was in 2021 when they finished just 0.3 points behind Great Britain. </strong>That result was thanks largely to Will Coleman and Off The Record who that year earned the USA&rsquo;s first-ever (and so far only) CHIO Aachen win.<br><br>This year, of course, it was second again <em>and </em>for the second time, the US team put two in the top five.</p>

<p><strong>&nbsp;</strong>What was key to their success this year? Every counting scorer for Team USA fully exploited the cross country phase. Will and Phillip each made their largest leaderboard climbs in that phase and Boyd continued his steady weekend climb thanks to cross-country day.</p>

<p dir="ltr"><strong>Will Coleman&nbsp;</strong>&amp; <strong>Off The Record</strong> were the second-fastest pair of the day, adding just 0.8 cross-country time penalties to their dressage score. (New Zealand's Monica Spencer &amp; Artist were fastest with 0.4 time penalties.)</p>
<p dir="ltr">Off The Record is Mr. Reliable when it comes to top-level cross country courses. In his career, <strong>he's faced 25 courses at the CCI4* and CCI5* levels; he's jumped clear in all but <em>one </em></strong>(CHIO Aachen 2023). Off The Record also happens to be in the top 0.3% of CCI4*-S cross-country horses when it comes to speed.</p>

<p dir="ltr">B<strong>oyd Martin </strong>&amp; <strong>Commando 3</strong> added just 3.2 XC time penalties to their dressage score. <strong>Commando 3 is ranked in the top 0.4% of CCI4*-S cross-country jumpers </strong>and this weekend he produced his second fastest time at the level (after his 1.2 time penalties in the 2024 Kentucky 4*-S).</p>
<h1 dir="ltr"><strong>Phillip Dutton &amp; Possante</strong></h1>
<p dir="ltr">Lastly,&nbsp;<strong>Phillip Dutton </strong>&amp;<strong> Possante </strong>climbed from <strong>26th after show-jumping to finish 11th after cross-country.</strong> They had a rail on Friday evening (hence the 26th place), but then added only 5.6 XC time penalties on a day when the average number of time penalties was 8.8.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Of Possante's nine CCI4* starts (having not yet done a CCI5*), he's have never had a cross-country jumping fault and, like this weekend, he's kept the time low (6.0 and less) on four of those occasions. With Great Britain's Emily King at the 2022 Blenheim CCI4*-S (8/9 YO class), Possante totaled just 2.0 time penalties. Earlier this year with Phillip in the TerraNova CCI4*-S, Possante added just 3.6 time. And last year at Boekelo CCI4*-L, he &amp; Phillip added just 6.0 time penalties.&nbsp;</p>

<p dir="ltr">Thanks to their exceptional final day, Team USA <strong>added only 9.6 cross-country points to their team score <span style="font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Aptos',sans-serif; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: Aptos; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-ansi-language: EN-IE; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA;">&ndash;</span></strong> going from 107.6 after show-jumping to 117.2 after cross-country (final).&nbsp; That was the <strong>lowest final-phase difference </strong>of all this year's CHIO Aachen teams. Next best were winners New Zealand who added 14.1 team points between SJ and XC. By maximising their performance over the CHIO Aachen cross-country course, the US team produced another proud showing in Germany.</p>

Despite leaking a few marks in the dressage phase, they moved from fourth to first by finishing on their dressage score. They came into Badminton as EquiRatings Prediction Centre favourites and held that status throughout, even though they only took the lead in the final 20 seconds of the entire competition. Sometimes the best performances are the ones that keep you holding your breath until the very end.</p>

This combination led the dressage with 18.6 - the best CCI5* dressage score at Kentucky since our records began in 2008. Despite adding some penalties along the way, no one could touch them, finishing 7.8 marks ahead of Boyd Martin and Commando 3.</p>

Her Burnham Market performance earned an impressive 107 &ndash; making these Oliver Townend's highest-rated performances since records began in 2008. Even with nine five-star wins, none of those reached this level, with HPRs ranging from 93 to 102.&nbsp;</p>

This represents their highest-rated performance together, surpassing even their three five-star podium finishes and their 4th place at the Paris Olympics. It's a perfect example of how HPR captures pure performance quality regardless of the competition level, importance, or prize money involved.</p>

This represents the highest HPR of Brandon's career, which has already been remarkably busy with 138 international starts at only 25 years old. Their dressage score of 18.1 was the<a href="https://news.equiratings.com/stories/the-seasons-standouts-top-10-dressage-scores-of-2025" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> lowest international dressage score</a> achieved by any rider this year. Remarkably, his second-best HPR (also a 103) came at the same event in the same class with Luxury From Second Life Z where he finished in 2nd to himself.</p>

The<strong> Opposition Beaten Percentage (OBP)</strong> reveals reliable horses&mdash;but this isn't just about consistency, it's about <strong>consistent excellence</strong>.<br><br>The OBP is a metric designed by EquiRatings to highlight the horses which are performing with the most consistency every season. The OBP is a single number that represents how many combinations you have competed against in a season, and what percentage of them you finished ahead of.&nbsp;</p>
<p class="whitespace-normal break-words">The horses on this list haven't just been reliable; they've been consistently amazing, with all of them achieving podiums or top 10 finishes across their <strong>last six international events.</strong></p>

<p><strong>1. Its Cooley Time</strong> and <strong>Bubby Upton</strong> lead with an impressive <strong>96% OBP6</strong>, having beaten 464 of 482 competitors across their last six starts. This partnership has just been named on Team GB's nominated entries list for the European Championships&mdash;a well-deserved recognition for a horse that's delivered six podiums in just 13 career starts.</p>
<p>At only 10 years old, Its Cooley Time won his first<strong> </strong>CCI4*-L at Bramham by finishing on his dressage score of 24.2. To be at the top of this list takes consistency across all three phases: all six recent international dressage scores have been sub-30, and they've jumped double clear in five of six outings (the exception being a single pole in the CCI3*-S at Kronenberg in 2024, which they still won).</p>
<p><strong>2. JL Dublin</strong> and <strong>Tom McEwen</strong>&mdash;two names that need no introduction&mdash;sit at <strong>95% OBP6</strong>, having beaten 351 of 370 competitors. This partnership also have a chance of heading to the European Championships for Great Britain. What makes their consistency so remarkable is the competitions that are included in it: Badminton 5*, the Paris Olympics, and Kentucky 5*. Despite this incredible consistency, the EquiRatings team still argue that Dublin is the best horse currently in the sport yet to win a five-star.</p>
<p><strong>3. Cooley All Over</strong> and <strong>Niki Rose</strong> complete the top three, competing all the way in Australia with a <strong>94% OBP6 </strong>(135 of 143 competitors beaten). This 7-year-old gelding has won three of his four international starts, marking him as a serious name to watch for the future. For seasoned rider Niki Rose, this young horse represents something special&mdash; out of her 84 international runs, Cooley All Over has delivered her 1st and 3rd best rated performances (by HPR) of her career.&nbsp;</p>

<p data-start="79" data-end="602">Sitting tenth on the list with a <strong>93% OBP6</strong> is <strong>Sharon White&rsquo;s</strong> rising star, <a href="https://www.usequestrianopen.org/stories/jaguars-duende-is-climbing-to-the-top" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Jaguars Duende.</strong> </a>Highlighted by EquiRatings last year as one to watch for the future, this mare&rsquo;s OBP6 only scratches the surface of her story. At just 9 years old, she&rsquo;s already earned 11 international podiums, which includes five wins from only 14 starts. Her recent win at Tryon CCI4*-S &mdash; where she posted the fastest cross-country time &mdash; secured back-to-back podiums in her first two runs at the level. Jaguars Duende is a name you need to know.</p>

We have already flagged these three horses as this years<a href="https://news.equiratings.com/stories/the-seasons-standouts-top-10-dressage-scores-of-2025" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> best dressage performers</a> and how Brandon Sch&auml;fer-Gehrau's young horses could be the stars of the future. While we already know they excel in the first phase, their high OBP6 ratings prove they're delivering in all three phases.</p>

Consistent Excellence: Who has the best OBP6 this year?

<p dir="ltr">It&rsquo;s the cross-country gold standard: clear inside the time. While &ndash; across all international levels &ndash; 72% jump clear across the county, a much lower&nbsp;<strong>24% jump clear <em>and </em>inside the time</strong><span style="color: rgb(120, 120, 120);"><em> </em><em>(all international XC runs, 2020 season onward).</em></span></p>
<p dir="ltr">And when focusing only at the top levels &ndash; <strong>CCI4* &amp; CCI5*</strong> &ndash; a clear inside the time is significantly harder to come by: 67% jump clear at those levels while just <strong>7% jump clear and inside the time</strong> <span style="color: rgb(120, 120, 120);"><em>(all international XC runs at CCI4*, CCI5*, Olympics &amp; Worlds, 2020 season onward).</em></span><br><br>So far this season, here are the riders who&rsquo;ve achieved the most international clears inside the time and who's achieved the feat at the top levels.</p>
