The podium. The moment that makes years of early mornings and endless schooling sessions worth it. But wanting it and knowing how to get there are two very different things.</p>
<p class="font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]">Yet, most of the athletes who reach those podiums couldn't tell you exactly why it worked when it did. But the data can. It shows what a medal-winning performance actually looks like, what metrics a horse needs to be hitting coming in, and how much overperformance on the day is typically required to close the gap. That clarity is something most combinations are competing without but it doesn't have to be.</p>
<p class="font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]">At EquiRatings, we've spent years building the tools to define exactly that. Here's what the data tells us about what it takes to win at Junior and Young Rider European level - and what it means for how you source horses and prepare.</p>

<h2 dir="ltr">Junior Europeans: Where It Starts</h2>
<p dir="ltr">Based on results at the Junior European Championships (CCI2*L) from 2015 to 2025, the average individual podium score is&nbsp;<strong>26.8</strong>. In ten championships, the highest finishing score from any podium position has been <strong>30.2 </strong>- a number that would only get you a bronze at Young Rider level on average. That gap alone tells you how different the two competitions are.</p>
<p dir="ltr">To make the top 10 at Juniors, you need to finish around <strong>31.3</strong> on average, and the highest top-10 score on record is <strong>37.3</strong>. The competition is tight, and the margins between the podium and the pack are significant.</p>

<p dir="ltr">The <em><strong>most important takeaway</strong> </em>is that the top-placed Junior competitors tend to significantly <em><strong>outperform</strong></em> their pre-competition metrics on the day.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Add together the average<strong> 6RA</strong> (average dressage score from the horse&rsquo;s last 6 international tests) and <strong>SJ6</strong> (average number of show jumping faults from the horse&rsquo;s last 6 international rounds) for Junior medallists, and you'd expect a two-phase score in the low 30s.&nbsp;But the average finishing score for the podium is <strong>26.8.</strong></p>
<p dir="ltr">That's a gap of roughly six points which are not accounted for by incoming form, but by <strong><em>overperformance </em></strong>on the day <em>(keep reading for a real championship example of this!).</em>&nbsp;By the time you reach 11th to 20th, competitors are finishing very close to their two-phase average. Beyond 20th,the majority of combinations are underperforming.</p>
<p dir="ltr">There's important context behind why those swings are so pronounced at junior level. A Six-Run Average (6RA) sounds like a meaningful sample, but for a junior combination it may only cover 18 months of international competition and a lot can change in 18 months for a 16 or 17-year-old. They can improve dramatically across a single season in a way a senior professional may not.</p>
<p dir="ltr"><em><strong>Improvement is real and it's expected.</strong></em> But that doesn't change what the data shows. Even accounting for genuine development, what separates the medallists is still a <em><strong>big </strong><strong>performance</strong></em> on the day.</p>

<h2 dir="ltr">Young Rider Europeans: Stepping Up</h2>
<p dir="ltr">Move up to the Young Rider European Championships (3*L level) and the benchmark shifts considerably. Individual gold is consistently a sub-30 finish, with the average winning score remaining consistent&nbsp;over the years.&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">Bronze trends around <strong>33.3 </strong>regardless of the era. And if you can finish sub-40, you're generally in the top 10, meaning for a large chunk of the field, a top-10 finish is within reach.</p>

<p dir="ltr">When you look at the incoming metrics &mdash; the form data horses bring into the competition &mdash; the two key differentiators for horses finishing in the top two positions are stronger dressage (<strong>6RA)</strong> and higher <strong>Elo ratings,</strong> with the average Elo for gold and silver medallists coming in above 500. XC form is strong and relatively level across the top 10, meaning cross-country execution is broadly competitive at this level and the medal race is largely decided in the other phases.</p>

<h2 dir="ltr">What This Means When Sourcing and Preparing a Horse</h2>
<p dir="ltr">The common assumption is that to win a medal at Junior or Young Rider Europeans, you need a horse already performing at that level. A horse posting sub-30 dressage scores and jumping records that match what the podium looks like. The data says otherwise.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The key phrase is<em><strong> within range. </strong></em>Because medal winners regularly outperform their recent form by five, six, seven points or more on championship day, you don't need a horse whose 6RA already sits at 26. You need a horse within an overperformance range of 26 - capable of hitting that on a very good day, even if their average is closer to a 30 or 32.</p>
<p dir="ltr"><strong>Cathal Daniels</strong> and <strong>Rioghan Rua</strong> are a clear illustration. In the build-up to the 2014 Junior Europeans at Bishop Burton, <strong>Rioghan Rua's </strong>recent dressage scores had been trending in the mid-to-high 30s. At the championship, they produced a <strong>27.8</strong> &mdash; over <strong>6 marks better than their 6RA</strong> at the time &mdash; on the way to a second-place finish. That performance then normalised back to their pre-competition range at the next event. The <em><strong>overperformance</strong></em> was real, and it was decisive.</p>

<p>Three riders, three horses, three huge moments. We take a look back at those moments ahead of the season finale - the 2026 Rolex US Equestrian Open CSI5 Grand Prix. These three will likely all be contenders again on Saturday night but so will many others. The season isn't done writing its story just yet.</p>

<h2>Vogel: Perfection by the Numbers</h2>
<p>The Week 5 CSI5* Grand Prix at the 2026 Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington was won by Richard Vogel (GER) riding Gangster Montdesir in the $500,000 Fidelity Investments Grand Prix. Richard Vogel is generally considered as one of the most talented riders in the sport and it seems that in Gangster Montdesir he has found his next superstar.</p>
<p>Gangster is just 10 years old, but he has been nothing short of immaculate at CSI5* 1.60m: five rounds, five clears, and two wins. This pair were fourth at Week 7 (one down in the jump-off). A young horse with a perfect record paired up the fast and talented rider, and a recent winner of this class. It would be no surprise if they win again this weekend.&nbsp;</p>
<h2>Ward: Home is Where the History Is</h2>
<p>Week 7&rsquo;s CSI5* Grand Prix was won by McLain Ward riding High Star Hero in the $500,000 Modon CSI5* Grand Prix. No rider in the last 15 years has won more often at Wellington than McLain and this is the week he often shines. This victory with High Star Hero was his fourth WEF Week 7 Grand Prix win since 2010, following previous successes in 2016, 2017, and 2020.</p>
<p>Together, Ward and High Star Hero have now won three CSI5* 1.60m classes and if they make the jump off on Saturday will have a big chance. If there is one rider who knows how to perform when Wellington asks its biggest questions, it is Ward.​ He is the most recent US rider to win the class (2019) and will be desperate to repeat the trick.&nbsp;</p>
<h2><br>Kenny: A Partnership Finding Its Peak</h2>
<p>Week 9&rsquo;s CSI5* Grand Prix was won by Darragh Kenny (IRL) riding Eddy Blue in the $500,000 Bainbridge Companies CSI5* Grand Prix. Darragh Kenny and Eddy Blue are one of Ireland&rsquo;s top rated combinations based on huge consistency and clear rounds and high placings in tough fields. The only surprise is that they haven't won more.</p>
<p>This victory was only their second CSI5* Grand Prix/World Cup win together, (following a London World Cup triumph in 2024). They like it here and before this win had finished on a WEF Week 7 podium last year. They are in form and likely to be in the jump off. What happens from there, we will see.&nbsp;</p>
<h2><br>A Decade of Week 12 Champions</h2>
<p>Three champions made and one more still to come - the last and most coveted title Wellington &nbsp;has to offer: the Rolex US Equestrian Open Grand Prix. The crown has gone to Germany in four of the last 5 years and with Richard Vogel and Christian Kukuk returning, the trend might well continue.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Christian Kukuk is the only rider to win it back-to-back in that span, taking both with his Olympic gold medal partner Checker 47 in 2024 and 2025. Last year's win also ensured he became the first ever winner of the US Equestrian Open. &nbsp;<br>McLain Ward is the only two-time winner in the period across different horses &mdash; HH Carlos Z in 2015 and HH Azur in 2019 &mdash; while the full list of champions includes Ben Maher, Sergio Alvarez Moya, Margie Goldstein-Engle, Dani G. Waldman, Daniel Deusser, Ashlee Bond, and Richard Vogel.</p>
<p>Of the 9 winning riders across that span, just one had never previously won a CSI5* 1.60m Grand Prix or World Cup before claiming this title. Margie Goldstein-Engle and Royce in 2018 are the exception that proves the rule. Every other champion arrived with that experience already banked. This is a class that tends to find riders who already know what winning at the top looks like.<br>By Saturday night, this list will have a new entry. The only question is whose name goes on it.</p>
<h2><br>Wellington Signs Off</h2>
<p>As WEF 2026 draws to a close, three five-star champions have already written their names into this season's story: Vogel's precision with a superstar young horse still finding his ceiling, Ward's unmatched WEF pedigree, and Kenny's surging momentum. This season has given us three worthy champions and on Saturday, a fourth will join them.</p>

This weekend's CCI4*-S at Carolina Horse Park carries an Elo Field Strength rating of 615 - the highest ever recorded at this venue. Very few events have topped it, coming in as the sixth-highest of any CCI4*-S staged on US soil on record.</p>
<p class="font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]">This weekend's surpasses the previous Carolina record of 605, set in 2024. And while Carolina is no stranger to strong competition &mdash; featuring 3 of the top 10 fields &mdash; this is by far the strongest it has ever been.</p>

It measures not just the headline act, but the depth of a field. A rating of 615 doesn't happen because one or two world-class horses showed up, it happens because the whole field is elite.</p>

This marks their first international start of the season, and an important one, with the horse reportedly Badminton-bound in May.</p>
<p class="font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]"><strong>Will Coleman, a&nbsp;</strong>three-time Carolina winner, arrives with <strong>Diabolo </strong>(676) - a solid shot for a fourth win. Among many accolades, their Kentucky CCI4*-S win in 2024 (612 field strength, third-highest on US soil) stands out as proof that they can perform against the very best.</p>
<p class="font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]"><strong>Caroline</strong> <strong>Pamukcu </strong>and <strong>HSH Blake, Phillip Dutton </strong>with the red-hot <strong>Denim</strong>, <strong>Sydney Elliott </strong>and <strong>QC Diamantaire,</strong> <strong>Tamie Smith </strong>with <strong>Lillet 3 </strong>- the list reads like a who's who of US eventing's current elite, with three of the last four Carolina winners also returning.</p>

This competition is going to be a major moment to set themselves apart from other combinations gunning for Aachen.&nbsp;</p>

EquiRatings' data shows that major four-star performances in the early season &mdash; those that crack the 100 HPR barrier &mdash; is one of the most reliable indicators of major championship results later in the year.&nbsp; With an exceptionally strong field, it is quite likely that the winner will come away with a 100+ HPR.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Badminton consistently attracts the most competitive fields in the sport. Using Elo field strength (calculated by averaging the Elo ratings of the top 25 horses entered), Badminton appears four times in the top 10 strongest five-star competitions on record.</p>

<p dir="ltr">The 2025 edition ranked as the third-strongest competition in history with an Elo field strength of 719, behind only the 2022 Pratoni World Championships (730) and the 2024 Paris Olympics (720). That's the field <strong>Lordships Graffalo</strong> or &lsquo;Walter&rsquo; to his friends conquered to secure his second Badminton title.</p>
<p dir="ltr">While the 2025 edition ranks among the strongest fields in history, Ros and Walter&rsquo;s 2023 victory was against the fifth highest-rated Badminton field on record. With this victory they achieved the highest HPR recorded at Badminton (111) since records began in 2008.</p>

<h2 dir="ltr">Who Might Come to Challenge Ros Canter at Badminton?</h2>
<p dir="ltr"><strong>Harry Meade</strong> has every reason to return. The British rider campaigned five horses at five-star level in 2025 and earned world number one points for his fourth and sixth place finishes at Badminton last year. With that kind of string depth, Meade has the ammunition to mount a serious challenge and he'll be gunning to defend those rankings.</p>
<p dir="ltr"><strong>Oliver Townend </strong>may come back to avenge his 2025 heartbreak. A single showjumping pole dropped him to second place and handed Canter the win. Townend holds the joint-most Badminton starts since 2008 with 20 appearances (tied with <strong>William Fox-Pitt</strong>), and while his string is smaller than usual, it's hard to imagine him sitting out an event this significant. <strong>Cooley Rosalent </strong>is likely his mount, and with a World Championship spot to secure through selection, Townend has plenty of motivation.</p>
<p dir="ltr"><strong>Tim Price </strong>has had a horse at Badminton every year since 2014, and fresh off his Pau five-star win with <strong>Jarillo </strong>in October, he's very likely to return with multiple rides again.</p>
<p dir="ltr"><strong>Caroline Powell,</strong> the 2023 Badminton winner, is another frequent starter with 16 appearances since 2008. After a breakthrough performance with <strong>High Time </strong>at Burghley 2025 (eighth place), she may look to better last year's Badminton result and prove that 2023 wasn't a one-off.</p>
<p dir="ltr">And then there's <strong>Cassie Sanger</strong>, the young American who was the best-placed first-timer at Burghley 2025 with <strong>Redfield Fyre. </strong>Based with<strong> Ros Canter </strong>in England, she is gaining experience at the biggest events while she's on this side of the Atlantic.</p>

<p>Twelve consecutive clear rounds at CSI5* 160 level. Only six combinations in the modern era of showjumping have ever reached that milestone. <strong>Nina Mallevaey </strong>and <strong>Dynastie de Beaufour</strong> are one of them&hellip;and they are not done yet.&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">One more clear round will see them draw level with&nbsp;<strong>Big Star</strong> and <strong>Nick Skelton's</strong> streak of 13 - a partnership that won both team and individual Olympic gold. The company does not get more elite than that.</p>

<h2 dir="ltr">Where did Nina Mallevaey&rsquo;s 12-round clear streak begin?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">The run began at Aachen in July 2025 - one of the most prestigious venues in the sport and part of the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping. Mallevaey produced a double clear in the Grand Prix, finishing fifth in a field of the world's best.&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">What followed was a remarkable sequence of consistency. Third at Dinard. Then Brussels, where the streak announced itself to the world.</p>
<p dir="ltr">At the Brussels Stephex Masters, Mallevaey delivered double clears in both the Nations Cup and the Rolex Grand Prix in the same week. In the Nations Cup, her flawless performance helped France to victory against nine other nations.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Two days later, she entered the ring for the Grand Prix and did it again to win to win Nina&rsquo;s first-ever 5* 160 win. The biggest win of her career and France's biggest five-star Grand Prix in years. Beating<strong> Gregory Wathelet, Harry Charles,</strong> and <strong>Gilles Thomas </strong>in the process, the 25-year-old climbed off <strong>Dynastie de Beaufour</strong> having won both of the week's feature classes without dropping a single rail across five-star competition all week.&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">Third at Arcadia in November followed by two fifth places at Thermal in December. The clear rounds kept coming.</p>

<p dir="ltr">WEF has given Mallevaey and <strong>Dynastie de Beaufour </strong>two more chapters of this story. At WEF Week 5, they jumped clear for third place in the Grand Prix. It was their 11th consecutive clear, a milestone reached by only eight combinations in modern history.&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">At WEF Week 7, a clear first round followed by a pole in the jump-off still produced a fifth-place finish in one of the strongest fields in the world.</p>
