The 9 and 10-year-olds ranked Top 20 for their age who gained Elo at CSI4* and CSI5* level this weekend. The large number is the world rank among all Elo-rated horses of that age.

How the Elo rating works

Elo is an objective horse rating adapted from chess. It updates every time a horse competes at CSI4* and CSI5* level at 150cm and above, and it weighs each result against the quality of the opposition. Beat a higher-rated horse and you take more points from it. Lose to a lower-rated one and you give more away.

Every horse starts at around 500. The world Top 100 currently begins at 729. The all-time record is 822.

A higher rating means more clear rounds at the top level. At CSI5* 160cm and above, horses rated under 500 jump clear 7% of the time. Horses rated 650 to 674 go clear 27% of the time, and horses over 775 go clear 58% of the time.

That is all Quito de Mariposa needs to join the world Top 100. Iron Dames Kaleni Jo holds the 100th spot on 729.

Cairo moved the Top 100 more than any other show this weekend. The next CSI5* results will decide whether Quito de Mariposa finds the one point still missing.
