The history of the President&rsquo;s Cup is steeped in top-level sport. Over the past decade, names like Beezie Madden, Laura Kraut, and Rodrigo Pessoa have headlined the winners&rsquo; list, with Pessoa and Major Tom taking the title in 2024. Last year&rsquo;s victory came by just 1.5 seconds, &nbsp;fitting for a class where, on average, the winning margin is narrower than the blink of an eye.

<h2>The Favorite: Ben Maher and Faltic HB</h2>
Returning to the top level after more than a year away, Ben Maher&rsquo;s Faltic HB comes in as the top-rated horse in the field, with an Elo rating of 746, among the Top 50 in the world. The pair posted a podium finish in Thursday&rsquo;s 1.55m class, showing sharp form ahead of tonight&rsquo;s challenge. With major championship credentials and a career 51% clear rate at 1.60m, Maher is a serious contender for a British victory in Washington.
<h2>The U.S. Charge</h2>
The home nation boasts several strong contenders, and the numbers suggest it could be a historic all-American podium.
Laura Kraut &amp; Tres Bien Z enter on a 10% win chance, matching Maher&rsquo;s. The 10-year-old mare ranks among the world&rsquo;s top 15 horses in her age group, and after a double clear in the Calgary Nations Cup, she&rsquo;s peaking at the right time. Kraut, a former winner of this class, could deliver another landmark victory for Team USA.
Alongside her, Lillie Keenan &amp; Fasther are riding a wave of form: podiums in Paris and Traverse City, as well as a 6th place finish in the prestigious Rolex Grand Prix of Aachen underline their consistency. Fasther&rsquo;s Elo rating of 736 and a 67% jump-off clear rate make them one of the most reliable combinations under pressure.
Then there&rsquo;s Mimi Gochman &amp; Inclen BH, a rising U.S. pair with a perfect 4/4 record in five-star jump-offs, every start clear, almost every outing a podium. Their composure in the ring makes them one of the standout threats in tonight&rsquo;s decider.

Germany&rsquo;s Rene Dittmer &amp; Corsica X return to Washington after finishing runner-up in 2023, fresh from victory in the MLSJ Grand Prix of Hudson Valley. With a 67% jump-off clear rate and recent Nations Cup success in Hickstead, they are among the most consistent partnerships in the field.
Ireland&rsquo;s Daniel Coyle lines up with Incredible boasting a stellar record. Incredible, winner of the Queen Elizabeth II Cup in Calgary, is one of the most in-form combinations in today&rsquo;s field.

As the 2025 season winds down, we wondered who might have a breakthrough season at CCI4*-S next year? We turned to the EquiRatings High Performance rating to give us some clues, looking at who had measurably good results at CCI3*-L this year as a precursor to a 2026 step-up.

<h1 dir="ltr">What&rsquo;s the HPR?</h1>
The High Performance Rating (HPR) measures the strength of a single performance. For every result, the HPR assesses factors such as quality of opponents beaten, winning margin, course difficulty and scoring conditions. Because these factors vary from one competition to another, not all wins are equal and not all scores exactly reflect the true level of performance. By acknowledging and capturing these variables, the HPR objectively compares performances and placings across different classes.
HPRs in the 90s are exceptional - the kind of complete performance that signals a horse is ready to climb the levels.
The following five combinations earned the highest HPRs among all CCI3*-L results on US soil this year.
<h1 dir="ltr">1. Isabelle Bosley &amp; Conner &mdash; HPR 96 | 24.8 (1st)</h1>
Best 3*-L result of 2025: 24.8 to win the 3*-L at Maryland 5 Star
Why it matters: Just eight years old, Conner produced one of the most complete 3*-L wins of 2025. On his first run at the level, Conner finished on his sub-25 dressage score to top the 53-strong field. The performance gave Isabelle her first CCI3*-L victory and one of the highest HPRs recorded all season.
<h1 dir="ltr">2. Alyssa Phillips &amp; Rockett 19 &mdash; HPR 95 | 25.5 (2nd)</h1>
Best 3*-L result of 2025: 25.5 for 2nd place in the Maryland 5 Star 3*-L
Why it matters: Having just acquired the ride on Rockett 19 this year, Alyssa and the 10-year-old have already produced two wins at the 3*-S level (Bouckaert &amp; Plantation). Finishing on their dressage score at Maryland 3*-L earned them a statement second place in the deep field.
<h1 dir="ltr">3. Rebecca Brown &amp; Fernhill Quite Frankly &mdash; HPR 88 | 29.3 (1st)</h1>
Best 3*-L result of 2025: 29.3 to win the Ocala 3*-L.
Why it matters: On Fernhill Quite Frankly&rsquo;s first ever run at the level, he and Rebecca earned the win. They were second after the first phase on a sub-30 score and, of 27 starters, Rebecca and the 10-year-old &ldquo;Frank&rdquo; were one of only two pairs to finish on their dressage score, winning on 29.3.
Of our top five list, Frank and Jewelent are the only horses who&rsquo;ve already contested a four-star. Frank&rsquo;s came a few months after his 3*-L win but the pair didn&rsquo;t complete cross-country on that first attempt, choosing to retire. A step down to 2*-S afterward proved a confidence-boosting run (jumped double clear) so it will be interesting to see how Frank carries his few months of extra experience into the four-star level next season.&nbsp;
<h1 dir="ltr">4. Olivia Dutton &amp; Jewelent &mdash; HPR 88 | 32.9 (3rd)</h1>
Best 3*-L result of 2025: 32.9 for 3rd in the Maryland 5 Star 3*-L
Why it matters: Jewelent is one of the more-familiar names on our list as the 13-year-old has already contested 20 four-stars and even jumped clear around Badminton 2022. But this was his first year with Olivia and the pair got to know each other with two three-star runs, including their 3rd place in the Maryland 3*-L.&nbsp;
With Sea Of Clouds, Olivia has 11 four-star runs under her belt so - with both Jewelent and Olivia knowing the four-star ropes - this will definitely be an exciting pair for 2026.&nbsp;
<h1 dir="ltr">5. Margaret Pellegrini &amp; Falcon Crown Z &mdash; HPR 85 | 27.7 (1st)</h1>
Best 3*-L result of 2025: 27.7 to win the CCI3*-L at Rebecca Farm
Why it matters: When Meg and Falcon Crown Z step up to four-star, it will be a level debut for both horse and rider. The pair took the Rebecca Farm 3*-L win by finishing on their dressage score. It was their first and only 3*-L as a pair (to date) and while they&rsquo;ve shown mixed cross-country form at the 3*-S level they did produce a second place result at Tryon 3*-S this past May and added just 0.8 time faults over the Plantation 3*-S course last year. They&rsquo;ve demonstrated ability at three-star and now it&rsquo;s just a matter of consistency and strategy for the step up to four-star.
<h1 dir="ltr">Why These Five Matter</h1>
Each combination delivered a complete three-phase performance: low dressage, efficient cross-country, and clean show-jumping. These are precisely the indicators of readiness that the US Equestrian Open of Eventing was created to celebrate; rewarding development, not just destination.

The 2026 US Equestrian Open of Eventing is already underway. <a href="https://www.usequestrianopen.org/stories/bellissimo-and-dyri-make-it-five-in-a-row-at-bouckaert" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bouckaert opened the season</a> and TerraNova is next on the calendar. Five Combinations Primed to Make Their Mark in the US 2026 Season

Last week at the FEI WBFSH Eventing World Championship for Young Horses, Tom McEwen finally claimed his first Le Lion d'Angers title with seven-year-old Brookfield Danny de Muze.&nbsp; Meanwhile, Lara de Liedekerke-Meier made history as the first Belgian rider to win here with six-year-old Tara Van Het Leliehof.
These victories represent hours and hours of training, preparation, and belief in young talent. But what do they actually tell us about the future and how much can success at Le Lion really predict? More importantly, how can we look beyond the podium to spot tomorrow&rsquo;s stars? The answer lies in the data.
<h2>Two Divisions, Two Different Stories</h2>
Looking at the last decade of winners reveals a pattern about what Le Lion success actually predicts - and where the results can be misleading if you only focus on the top of the leaderboard.
The seven-year-old division has been the more reliable indicator of four-star success. Of the last nine winners (excluding Tom McEwen's 2025 win, which is too recent to judge), six&nbsp;have gone on to win at least one four-star event. These aren't just horses competing at the level - they're winning. Yet interestingly, none have achieved sustained five-star success... yet. Tim Price's Happy Boy is set to compete at Pau 5* this weekend. By comparison, the six-year-old division tells a different story. Only three of the last eight winners (excluding the two most recent) have won at four-star level: Tom Carlile's Golden De Beliard AA, Kitty King's Cristal Fontaine&nbsp;and Izzy Taylor's Monkeying Around. The success rate is lower, the outcomes more varied. It makes sense - there's a longer road from two-star to four-star, and more can change along the way.

The takeaway? Seven-year-old performance at Le Lion is a stronger predictor of immediate top-level success, while six-year-old results show promise but it's far from a guarantee. It&rsquo;s a useful signal but not the full story.

<h2>The Le Lion Effect</h2>
So what happens when you look beyond just the winners? That&rsquo;s where Le Lion&rsquo;s real impact becomes clear. But even beyond the winners, Le Lion tells a bigger story. Horses that compete at Le Lion d'Angers are&nbsp;four times more likely to reach five-star level than the average international eventing horse. Since 2008, of the 1,453 horses that have competed at Le Lion, 291&mdash;or 20%&mdash;have gone on to compete at five-star. Compare that to just 5% across all 43,678 international horses in our database (records go back to 2008) and the Le Lion advantage becomes undeniable.

<h2>The Legends Who Didn't Win</h2>
If Le Lion horses are statistically more likely to reach five-star, these names prove exactly why. It&rsquo;s not about who wins - it&rsquo;s about who keeps climbing.
Avebury&nbsp;placed thirteenth in 2007. Andrew Nicholson's partner then won three consecutive Burghleys (2008-2010). Avebury consistently made the time cross-country at the world's toughest events and was the definition of a five-star horse. fischerChipmunk FRH finished twenty-ninth in 2015 when Julia Krajewski rode him. Michael Jung then piloted the horse to Olympic individual gold and two Kentucky 5* wins. He is currently the highest-rated horse in the sport and the second-highest ever recorded in EquiRatings' database. Lordships Graffalo finished eighth in the 2019 seven-year-old division. Fast forward six years, and he's the highest-rated British horse in EquiRatings history. In September, Walter became the first horse to ever complete the 'double-double': winning both Badminton and Burghley twice.
And to name a few more; Greenacres Special Cavalier finished 17th at Le Lion before becoming a Badminton winner with Caroline Powell. Hooney d&rsquo;Arville placed sixth as a six-year-old, before retiring on course the next year - a few years later she claimed Belgium&rsquo;s first-ever five-star victory with&nbsp;Lara de Liedekerke-Meier. And Jonelle Price&rsquo;s Faerie Dianimo, sixteenth back in 2011, went on to feature in a remarkable 1-2-3 sweep at Luhm&uuml;hlen (in different years, of course). Le Lion produces horses far more likely to reach five-star - it&rsquo;s a launchpad for careers, not just a podium. But identifying those future stars takes more than watching the prize-giving. That&rsquo;s where data comes in.
<h2>Why This Matters</h2>
Most people focus on the winner. But if you'd identified Lordships Graffalo's potential when he finished eighth, or recognized fischerChipmunk FRH's quality at twenty-ninth, you'd own horses that went on to dominate the sport.
The challenge isn't knowing that Le Lion matters - everyone knows that. The real challenge is identifying which horses in the field have the data-backed indicators of long-term success.

The Young Horse Forecast: What Le Lion Really Tells Us About the Future

Felix Vogg has etched his name deeper into eventing history, riding Cartania to victory at Maryland CCI5*, marking Felix's 40th international win. Felix&rsquo;s win surprised a few of us - myself and his pre-competition win chance of 5% included. A lot of the pre and mid-event narrative focused elsewhere: hometown hero Boyd Martin, Britain's Alex Bragg, and the thoroughbred trio of Artist, Phelps, and Humble Glory that had everyone talking. While the headlines swirled around a number of other combinations, Felix Vogg simply went about his business. He delivered in all three phases while others fell by the wayside... or just fell off... or the poles just fell... Felix delivered from start to finish: an accurate dressage test, an efficient cross-country round, and of course, their tidy showjumping round. In Maryland's fifth year of running, Felix joins an exclusive hall of fame which has five different riders from five different nations.

Vogg's Maryland triumph makes him the only Swiss rider to claim two five-star wins. His first came aboard Colero at Luhm&uuml;hlen in 2022, making him the first Swiss rider to win at the five-star level since Hans Schwarzenbach's Badminton victory in&nbsp;1951 - a staggering 71-year gap.
The win also marks the first Swiss victory on US soil&nbsp;since records began in 2008.&nbsp;And before you ask - yes, there have been plenty of attempts. Since 2008, there have been 40 Swiss starts in the US and Felix himself even gave it a good go during his time based Stateside.
The numbers behind Swiss riders at 5* point to one thing: Vogg's dominance. He has accounted for 16 of the 41 starts made by Swiss riders at CCI5* level (including Olympics and World Championships) since 2008 - an impressive 40% of all Swiss five-star attempts. Those 41 starts represent 13 different Swiss riders, including Felix's brother Ben Vogg, who competed alongside Felix on the 2016 Rio Olympic Team.

Cartania, a 14-year-old Holsteiner mare owned by Phoenix Eventing S.&agrave;.r.l., has been Vogg's partner since 2018. Their journey began seven years ago when she was just seven years old - and it started in the United States.
Their first international together was at Plantation Field in a CCI2*-S, where they jumped double clear to finish fourth. After two events that autumn, the pair returned to Europe and spent the next seven years competing across another eight countries.&nbsp;
The US didn't see&nbsp;Cartania again until she returned last weekend - coming full circle to claim victory.

Perhaps the most intriguing part of this victory was Vogg&rsquo;s showjumping round which he rode Cartania in a hackamore for. Since switching after a dental issue earlier in the year,&nbsp;Cartania has now jumped three clears from three attempts.
Given that in Cartania&rsquo;s previous seven long-format runs at top level she had only jumped clear once, Vogg&rsquo;s chances looked slim &mdash; just 24% compared to Monica Spencer&rsquo;s 73% going into the showjumping. But the timing of the switch to a bitless bridle couldn&rsquo;t have been better. That clear round on the final day sealed the deal.&nbsp;
It was the missing piece. And when Vogg gets it right, he really gets it right - from 16 career 5* starts, Felix has jumped clear only twice&hellip; and won both times.
<h2 class="text-xl font-bold text-text-100 mt-1 -mb-0.5">A New Era for Swiss Eventing</h2>
Vogg's victory comes amid an exciting period for Swiss eventing. At the recent European Championships, the Swiss team held third place after a brilliant cross-country day featuring particularly fast rounds from M&eacute;lody Johner and Nadja Minder, coached by the legendary Andrew Nicholson. Though showjumping ultimately dropped them from medal contention (dare I suggest a hackamore?!), the performance is evidence of the growing strength in the Swiss program.&nbsp;
With Vogg's historic achievement on American soil and new riders pushing through, Swiss eventing appears poised for its brightest era in over 70 years.

Did you notice the reccurrence of the number 40? Coincidentally, this was&nbsp;Felix&rsquo;s 40th international win, achieved on his and Cartania&rsquo;s 40th start together, and as if that weren&rsquo;t enough, it was also the 40th Swiss start on US soil since records began in 2008. (Felix, if only we could age you a few years to 40 - the symmetry would be perfect.)

From Plantation to Podium: Felix Vogg Makes Swiss History

Some Grands Prix are just big; others arrive with history attached. Tryon is shaping up as the latter. Between record-breaking win streaks, podium consistency at the highest level, and a remarkable clear-round profile emerging across the MLSJ calendar, tonight&rsquo;s Grand Prix has more on the line than just leaderboard points. Several of the world&rsquo;s most in-form combinations are approaching statistical territory rarely seen in modern five-star sport, and multiple all-time marks could move tonight.
<h2>THE RIDER RECORD: Farrington chases his own history</h2>
Kent Farrington enters Tryon with the chance to rewrite a record he already shares.
