<p>Last week at the <strong>FEI WBFSH Eventing World Championship for Young Horses</strong>,<strong> Tom McEwen</strong> finally claimed his first Le Lion d'Angers title with seven-year-old <strong>Brookfield Danny de Muze.</strong>&nbsp; Meanwhile, <strong>Lara de Liedekerke-Meier </strong>made history as the first Belgian rider to win here with six-year-old <strong>Tara Van Het Leliehof.</strong></p>
<p>These victories represent hours and hours of training, preparation, and belief in young talent. But what do they actually tell us about the future and how much can success at Le Lion really predict? More importantly, how can we look beyond the podium to spot tomorrow&rsquo;s stars?<br><br>The answer lies in the data.</p>
<h2>Two Divisions, Two Different Stories</h2>
<p>Looking at the last decade of winners reveals a pattern about what Le Lion success actually predicts - and where the results can be misleading if you only focus on the top of the leaderboard.</p>
<p>The seven-year-old division has been the more reliable indicator of four-star success. Of the last nine winners (excluding <strong>Tom McEwen's</strong> 2025 win, which is too recent to judge),<strong> five</strong> have gone on to win at least one four-star event. These aren't just horses competing at the level - they're winning. Yet interestingly, none have achieved sustained five-star success... yet. <strong>Tim Price's Happy Boy</strong> is set to compete at Pau 5* this weekend. <p>By comparison,<strong> the six-year-old division</strong> tells a different story. Only two of the last eight winners (excluding the two most recent) have won at four-star level:<strong> Kitty King's Cristal Fontaine</strong>&nbsp;and<strong> Izzy Taylor's Monkeying</strong> <strong>Around. </strong>The success rate is lower, the outcomes more varied. It makes sense - there's a longer road from two-star to four-star, and more can change along the way.</p>

<p>The takeaway? Seven-year-old performance at Le Lion is a stronger predictor of immediate top-level success, while six-year-old results show promise but it's far from a guarantee. It&rsquo;s a useful signal but not the full story.</p>

<h2>The Le Lion Effect</h2>
<p>So what happens when you look beyond just the winners? That&rsquo;s where Le Lion&rsquo;s real impact becomes clear.<br><br>But even beyond the winners, Le Lion tells a bigger story. Horses that compete at Le Lion d'Angers are&nbsp;<strong>four times more likely to reach five-star</strong> level than the average international eventing horse. Since 2008, of the <strong>1,453</strong> horses that have competed at Le Lion, <strong>291</strong>&mdash;<strong>or 20%</strong>&mdash;have gone on to compete at five-star. Compare that to just <strong>5%</strong> across all <strong>43,678</strong> international horses in our database (records go back to 2008) and the Le Lion advantage becomes undeniable.</p>

<h2>The Legends Who Didn't Win</h2>
<p>If Le Lion horses are statistically more likely to reach five-star, these names prove exactly why. It&rsquo;s not about who wins - it&rsquo;s about who keeps climbing.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">Avebury</span>&nbsp;placed thirteenth in 2007<strong>. Andrew Nicholson's</strong> partner then won three consecutive Burghleys (2008-2010). <strong>Avebury</strong> consistently made the time cross-country at the world's toughest events and was the definition of a five-star horse.<br><br><strong>FischerChipmunk FRH</strong> finished twenty-ninth in 2015 when <strong>Julia Krajewski </strong>rode him. <strong>Michael Jung</strong> then piloted the horse to Olympic individual gold and two Kentucky 5* wins. He is currently the highest-rated horse in the sport and the second-highest ever recorded in EquiRatings' database.<br><br><strong>Lordships Graffalo</strong> finished eighth in the 2019 seven-year-old division. Fast forward six years, and he's the highest-rated British horse in EquiRatings history. In September, Walter became the first horse to ever complete the 'double-double': winning both Badminton and Burghley twice.</p>
<p>And to name a few more; <strong>Greenacres Special Cavalier finished</strong> 17th at Le Lion before becoming a Badminton winner with <strong>Caroline Powel</strong>l.<strong> Hooney d&rsquo;Arville</strong> placed sixth as a six-year-old, before retiring on course the next year - a few years later she claimed Belgium&rsquo;s first-ever five-star victory with<strong>&nbsp;Lara de Liedekerke-Meier.</strong> And<strong> Jonelle Price&rsquo;s Faerie Dianimo,</strong> sixteenth back in 2011, went on to feature in a remarkable 1-2-3 sweep at Luhm&uuml;hlen (in different years, of course).<br><br>Le Lion produces horses far more likely to reach five-star - it&rsquo;s a launchpad for careers, not just a podium. But identifying those future stars takes more than watching the prize-giving. That&rsquo;s where data comes in.</p>
<h2>Why This Matters</h2>
<p>Most people focus on the winner. But if you'd identified <strong>Lordships Graffalo's </strong>potential when he finished eighth, or recognized<strong> FischerChipmunk FRH's </strong>quality at twenty-ninth, you'd own horses that went on to dominate the sport.</p>

<p class="whitespace-normal break-words"><strong>Felix Vogg </strong>has etched his name deeper into eventing history, riding <strong>Cartania </strong>to victory at Maryland CCI5*, marking Felix's 40th international win.<br><br>Felix&rsquo;s win surprised a few of us - myself and his pre-competition win chance of 5% included. A lot of the pre and mid-event narrative focused elsewhere: hometown hero <strong>Boyd Martin, </strong>Britain's <strong>Alex Bragg, </strong>and the thoroughbred trio of<strong> Artist, Phelps,</strong> and<strong> Humble Glory </strong>that had everyone talking. While the headlines swirled around a number of other combinations,<strong> Felix Vogg</strong> simply went about his business. He delivered in all three phases while others fell by the wayside... or just fell off... or the poles just fell...<br><br>Felix delivered from start to finish: an accurate dressage test, an efficient cross-country round, and of course, their tidy showjumping round. In Maryland's fifth year of running, Felix joins an exclusive hall of fame which has five different riders from five different nations.</p>

<p class="whitespace-normal break-words">Vogg's Maryland triumph makes him the <strong>only Swiss rider to claim two five-star wins.</strong> His first came aboard<strong> Colero </strong>at Luhm&uuml;hlen in 2022, making him the first Swiss rider to win at the five-star level since <strong>Hans Schwarzenbach's</strong> Badminton victory in&nbsp;<strong>1951</strong> - a staggering 71-year gap.</p>
<p class="whitespace-normal break-words">The win also marks the <strong data-start="138" data-end="203">first Swiss victory on US soil&nbsp;</strong>since records began in 2008.&nbsp;And before you ask - yes, there have been plenty of attempts. Since 2008, there have been <strong data-start="292" data-end="311">40 Swiss starts</strong> in the US and Felix himself even gave it a good go during his time based Stateside.</p>
<p class="whitespace-normal break-words">The numbers behind Swiss riders at 5* point to one thing: Vogg's dominance. He has accounted for 16 of the 41 starts made by Swiss riders at CCI5* level (including Olympics and World Championships) since 2008 - an impressive 40% of all Swiss five-star attempts. Those 41 starts represent 13 different Swiss riders, including Felix's brother <strong>Ben Vogg, </strong>who competed alongside Felix on the 2016 Rio Olympic Team.</p>

<p class="whitespace-normal break-words"><strong>Cartania,</strong> a 14-year-old Holsteiner mare owned by<strong> Phoenix Eventing S.&agrave;.r.l., </strong>has been Vogg's partner since 2018. Their journey began seven years ago when she was just seven years old - and it started in the United States.</p>
<p class="whitespace-normal break-words">Their first international together was at Plantation Field in a CCI2*-S, where they jumped double clear to finish fourth. After two events that autumn, the pair returned to Europe and spent the next seven years competing across another eight countries.&nbsp;</p>
<p class="whitespace-normal break-words">The US didn't see&nbsp;<strong>Cartania </strong>again until she returned last weekend - coming full circle to claim victory.</p>

<p data-start="133" data-end="358">Perhaps the most intriguing part of this victory was Vogg&rsquo;s showjumping round which he rode<strong> Cartania</strong> in a hackamore for. Since switching after a dental issue earlier in the year,&nbsp;<strong>Cartania</strong> has now jumped <strong data-start="319" data-end="356">three clears from three attempts.</strong></p>
<p data-start="360" data-end="659">Given that in <strong>Cartania&rsquo;s</strong> previous seven long-format runs at top level she had only jumped clear once, Vogg&rsquo;s chances looked slim &mdash; just <strong data-start="255" data-end="262">24%</strong> compared to <strong>Monica Spencer&rsquo;s</strong> <strong data-start="292" data-end="299">73%</strong> going into the showjumping. But the timing of the switch to a bitless bridle couldn&rsquo;t have been better. That clear round on the final day sealed the deal.&nbsp;</p>
<p data-start="661" data-end="806">It was the missing piece. And when Vogg gets it right, he really gets it right - from 16 career 5* starts, Felix has jumped clear only twice&hellip; and won both times.</p>
<h2 class="text-xl font-bold text-text-100 mt-1 -mb-0.5">A New Era for Swiss Eventing</h2>
<p class="whitespace-normal break-words">Vogg's victory comes amid an exciting period for Swiss eventing. At the recent European Championships, the Swiss team held third place after a brilliant cross-country day featuring particularly fast rounds from <strong>M&eacute;lody Johner</strong> and <strong>Nadja Minder</strong>, coached by the legendary <strong>Andrew Nicholson.</strong> Though showjumping ultimately dropped them from medal contention (dare I suggest a hackamore?!), the performance is evidence of the growing strength in the Swiss program.&nbsp;</p>
<p class="whitespace-normal break-words">With Vogg's historic achievement on American soil and new riders pushing through, Swiss eventing appears poised for its brightest era in over 70 years.</p>

Coincidentally, this was&nbsp;<strong data-start="119" data-end="153">Felix&rsquo;s 40th international win</strong>, achieved on <strong data-start="167" data-end="209">his and Cartania&rsquo;s 40th start together</strong>, and as if that weren&rsquo;t enough, it was also the <strong data-start="261" data-end="294" data-is-only-node="">40th Swiss start on US soil</strong> since records began in 2008.<br data-start="323" data-end="326"><em>(Felix, if only we could age you a few years to 40 - the symmetry would be perfect.)<br></em></p>

From Plantation to Podium: Felix Vogg Makes Swiss History

<p>Some Grands Prix are just big; others arrive with history attached. Tryon is shaping up as the latter. Between record-breaking win streaks, podium consistency at the highest level, and a remarkable clear-round profile emerging across the MLSJ calendar, tonight&rsquo;s Grand Prix has more on the line than just leaderboard points. Several of the world&rsquo;s most in-form combinations are approaching statistical territory rarely seen in modern five-star sport, and multiple all-time marks could move tonight.</p>
<h2>THE RIDER RECORD: Farrington chases his own history</h2>
<p>Kent Farrington enters Tryon with the chance to rewrite a record he already shares. The benchmark for most CSI5* Grand Prix / World Cup wins in a single calendar year currently stands at eight, set by Farrington himself in 2017 and matched again in 2025. <p class="whitespace-normal break-words"><strong>Boyd Martin</strong> and&nbsp;<strong>Miks Master C,</strong> who competed first on day two, sit third on 25.9. The score carries particular significance given<strong> Boyd Martin's </strong>remarkable record with sub-27 dressage tests at this level. Boyd has turned every previous sub-27 test at CCI4*-L into a victory - winning at Jersey Fresh in 2018 and 2021, Morven Park in 2023, Tryon in 2020, and Fair Hill in 2011 with scores ranging from 25.4 to 26.9.</p>

Cross Country Eve at Morven Park

<p class="whitespace-normal break-words"><strong>Will Coleman</strong> and <strong>Off The Record</strong> maintained their lead after a tense cross-country phase at the US Equestrian Open Eventing Final CCI4*-L, but a late-night flag review tightened the competition heading into Sunday's show jumping finale.</p>
<p class="whitespace-normal break-words">Coleman became the first rider to make the optimum time twice at Morven Park's CCI4*-L - first finishing with his new ride <strong>Very Dignified</strong> and then finishing in 10:04 with <strong>Off The Record -</strong> five seconds inside<strong> Derek di Grazia's</strong> 10:09 time allowed. The performance keeps him on his dressage score of 25.1, but his cushion has shrunk considerably.<br><br><strong>Will Coleman</strong> spoke about his round with <strong>Off The Record:</strong></p>

When officials removed both penalties late Saturday evening, Martin moved into second on 28.7&mdash;just 3.6 penalties behind Coleman.</p>
