In 2024, they posted one of the highest 5* 160cm clear rates (67%), and 2025 has started just as strong, with three clears from three rounds. Two of those rounds came from Grand Prix performances, where they finished first and second. They show remarkable consistency at the highest level, and there&rsquo;s no sign of slowing down.</p>

After two Grand Prix performances in Wellington this year, where they finished in fifth and third place, suggest the confidence is back, and when King Edward is confident, the rest of the field should be on high alert.</p>

The Battle to be the Best: Show Jumping’s Biggest Stories So Far

<p>The truth is, I didn&rsquo;t want to sell. But I used the chance to get Rozzie on the phone and do some digging! The idea of approaching horse sales with a data-driven mindset made complete sense to me. It was something I was passionate about because it addressed so many questions I had been considering throughout my time in the sport.</p>
<h2><strong>The Big Questions in Horse Sales</strong></h2>
<h3>From a&nbsp;<strong>sales perspective</strong>, I had often wondered:</h3>

The Mystery Behind EquiRatings Horse Sales

<p dir="ltr"><strong>Across the 2023 and 2024 seasons, US Olympian Caroline Pamukcu notched up 20 international wins - the most of any rider in the world. Five weeks ago she became a mother for the first time and so you would be forgiven for thinking that she would take her time to ease in the 2025 season&hellip;&nbsp;</strong></p>
<p dir="ltr">But there was absolutely no &lsquo;taking her time&rsquo; whatsoever in her first US Equestrian Open qualifier at Bouckaert this weekend. She absolutely blitzed her opponents, registering the fastest time of the day by 18 seconds to take the win aboard the thoroughbred HSH Double Sixteen.&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">Series leader, <strong>Phillip Dutton</strong>, was second the fastest on the experienced Jewelent, out of a thoroughbred mare, but the performance was only enough to take the third spot on the podium. The competition&rsquo;s leader after both of the first two phases, <strong>Lucienne Bellissimo</strong> with Dyri, has a spring five-star in her sights and she claimed the second spot having taken on a few more time penalties than her rivals either side of her.&nbsp;</p>
<h3 dir="ltr">Part of the plan&hellip;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</h3>
<p dir="ltr">Bouckaert has proved influential post the dressage phase, with only one competitor at this level ever finishing on their dressage score at this venue - <a href="https://digital.equiratings.com/view/306031364/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">check out our form guide here for a deeper dive</a>. Pamukcu knows her numbers, and when asked if this always looked an opportunity for HSH Double Sixteen she affirmed the plan:</p>

<p dir="ltr">Parenthood has spurred on many remarkable performances in sport, but there can&rsquo;t be many mothers to have returned to peak performance so soon after welcoming their child into the world. Kicking off her 2025 season with another international victory, she was quick to credit those around her and pay a special tribute to the smallest of them all:&nbsp;</p>

<p dir="ltr">&ldquo;Blake is just 5 weeks old and I am lucky to have an incredible support team that&rsquo;s been in place right from the beginning. My husband keeps reminding me when I second guess myself that we have the best support or belief backing us to make this possible, so I just have to focus on trusting and leaning on that. I definitely have fire in my belly to show I still have my same form, but I&rsquo;ve felt that way every year. I wouldn&rsquo;t trade having Blake in my life for anything.&rdquo;&nbsp;</p>

<h3 dir="ltr">What&rsquo;s Next&nbsp;</h3>
<p dir="ltr">As riders have traded thoroughbred blood for dressage prowess in their event horses, there is undoubtedly opportunity available for gallopers over the next few years as the sport corrects itself. HSH Double Sixteen looks a huge long term prospect to benefit around tracks like Badminton and Burghley, but it looks like he could make his first appearance at the pinnacle level of the sport on home soil. The winning-most rider in the world currently will also look to make the most of the exciting new US Equestrian Open:</p>

<p dir="ltr">&ldquo;I&rsquo;m definitely focusing on the US Opens and am aiming for both Carolina and TerraNova. I&rsquo;m looking to have a horse for every US Open that I feel I could win. For &ldquo;Six&rdquo;, he&rsquo;ll do the four short at TerraNova and then hopefully the five-star at Kentucky if I can continue to improve my fitness.&rdquo;&nbsp;</p>

Statement Win for Returning Pamukcu

<p>As the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) gears up for its third five-star Grand Prix of the season, anticipation is at an all-time high. Saturday night&rsquo;s $500,000 CSI5* Bainbridge Companies Grand Prix will see some of the world&rsquo;s best combinations battle it out under the lights in the International Arena. With just one more CSI5* Grand Prix left before the $750,000 Rolex US Equestrian Open Final during WEF 12, this is a crucial moment for riders to make their mark.</p>

<p>Two of the biggest names in the sport will enter the ring as the highest-rated horses in the competition: <strong>Henrik von Eckermann &amp; King Edward </strong>and <strong>Christian Kukuk &amp; Checker 47</strong>. These two reigning champions&mdash;King Edward as the current World Champion and Checker 47 as the reigning Olympic Champion&mdash;have already proven themselves at WEF this season.</p>
<p>King Edward, the highest-rated horse on record with an Elo rating of 810, finished fifth in the WEF 5 CSI5* Grand Prix after delivering a solid double clear. Meanwhile, Checker 47 has been nothing short of dominant, claiming a CSI4* Grand Prix victory during WEF 3, finishing as the runner-up in WEF 7&rsquo;s five-star Grand Prix, and are of course the defending champions of the WEF 12 Grand Prix.</p>
<p>Both horses arrive in top form and will be the combinations to beat when the competition heats up under the Saturday night lights.</p>
<h1>The Hometown Heroes</h1>
<h3>McLain Ward &amp; Ilex &ndash; The USA&rsquo;s Best Shot?</h3>
<p>If the American crowd is looking for a home victory, their hopes may rest on McLain Ward &amp; Ilex. This combination played a key role in securing Team USA&rsquo;s Olympic silver medal in Paris last summer, and Ilex will be making his five-star Grand Prix season debut here at WEF 9.</p>
<p>Ward&rsquo;s track record at the Winter Equestrian Festival speaks for itself. Since 2010, he has amassed an impressive 60 international wins at this venue. He is also one of just two riders in history to win multiple five-star Grands Prix in the same WEF season&mdash;a feat that only one other rider has ever achieved.</p>
<h3>Kent Farrington &amp; Myla &ndash; Making History?</h3>
<p>That rider? Kent Farrington&mdash;who has already won both five-star Grands Prix of the WEF 2025 season aboard Greya. No rider has ever managed to win more than two five-star Grand Prix classes in a single WEF season, but with Myla in strong form, Farrington could be on the verge of rewriting history.</p>
<p>Though Myla sits just outside the Top 10 Elo-rated horses in the field (Elo: 720), she is ranked among the Top 5 highest-rated 10-year-old horses in the world. Farrington&rsquo;s record speaks for itself, and if anyone can pull off the impossible, it&rsquo;s him.</p>
<h3>Lillie Keenan &amp; Argan de Beliard &ndash; A Veteran of the International Arena</h3>
<p>For Lillie Keenan &amp; Argan de Beliard, experience will be key. The 13-year-old gelding will be jumping his 40th five-star 160cm round in this Grand Prix, with 12 of those rounds already taking place in this very arena at WEF.</p>
<p>Most recently, the pair delivered a strong podium finish, taking third place in the WEF 7 CSI5* Grand Prix. With familiarity and form on their side, they will be looking to improve upon that result as they take on another stacked field this weekend.</p>
<h1>The Challengers</h1>
<h3>Darragh Kenny &amp; Zero K &ndash; The Momentum Factor</h3>
<p>Ireland has always had a strong presence in Wellington, and this year is no exception. Leading the charge will be Darragh Kenny &amp; Zero K, who will enter the ring last in the draw after their WEF 9 Challenge Cup victory last Thursday. Kenny has a history of success under the lights, and with momentum on his side, he could be a serious contender for the win.</p>

Coming off a runner-up finish in the Ocala World Cup last month, James Kann Cruz is in top form and could be one of the biggest threats to the championship favorites.</p>

<p>With elite talent from around the world converging on Wellington, this promises to be one of the most thrilling nights of the WEF 2025 season. Can King Edward solidify his reign? Will Checker 47 add another WEF Grand Prix title to his record? Or will a US rider rise to the occasion on home soil? Champions, Challengers & Hometown Heroes: Who Will Reign in WEF 9’s Five-Star Grand Prix?

<p>Since 2010, only one rider has ever won more than two five-star Grand Prix classes in a single WEF season. That record belongs to McLain Ward, whose historic 2016 and 2020 campaigns set a benchmark in Wellington&rsquo;s International Arena. For those back-to-back victories, he had been riding different horses, so up until this year not a single horse had ever won five-star Grands Prix in WEF during the same season. Since last weekend, Kent Farrington&rsquo;s Greya has challenged that legacy, with back-to-back five-star victories during the Winter Equestrian Festival in 2025.</p>

<p>In 2016, <strong>McLain Ward</strong> became the first rider to ever win back-to-back five-star Grands Prix during the same WEF season. He picked up the first of his wins that season riding <strong><em>Rothchild</em></strong>, fresh off their Pan-American Individual victory. Two weeks after that WEF win, he repeated that performance on 10-year-old HH Azur, with whom he had already won a five-star Grand Prix in Calgary the previous year.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Four years later, McLain showed he wasn&rsquo;t finished writing history in Wellington. He started the 2020 season off by winning the five-star Grand Prix riding<strong><em> Noche de Ronda</em></strong> during WEF 5. Since her 2016 Grand Prix victory, HH Azur had only continued to improve on her incredible form, helping Team USA claim Team Silver at the Rio Olympic Games and winning the 2017 World Cup Finals. It was therefore no surprise when McLain claimed his second five-star Grand Prix victory of the 2020 Wellington season riding HH Azur during WEF 7.</p>
<p>For years, McLain Ward remained the only rider to ever claim more than one five-star Grand Prix victory in one WEF season and no horse had ever managed to achieve this.</p>
<p>That all changed last weekend. While <strong>Kent Farrington</strong> became the second rider to win more than 1 five-star Grand Prix during the same WEF season, his 11-year-old mare <em><strong>Greya </strong></em>has become the first horse to achieve this incredible milestone.</p>

<p>Following on the back of an incredible 2024 season, Kent Farrington&rsquo;s Greya has continued her superb form into the 2025 season. They started the year off with a victory in their first five-star Grand Prix during WEF5. Two weeks later, the pair repeated this performance with another Grand Prix win during WEF7. This puts Greya in the history books as the first horse to win more than one five-star Grand Prix during the same Wellington season.</p>
<p>Farrington attributes Greya&rsquo;s success to her unique attributes: "Her foot speed across the middle of the course and her ability to sprint to the next fence make her very hard to catch. She's ultra careful, so you can run at the jumps at speed, and she's an incredible competitor&mdash;she's a great modern show jumper."</p>
<p>Despite these back-to-back five-star wins, Farrington insists that Greya has yet to fully peak: "She's coming of age now where she can really compete, and I'm proud of what she's showing she can do. I've always thought a lot of this horse, and I&rsquo;m enjoying the moment."</p>
<p>Greya has strengthened her position as the highest-rated US horse on an Elo rating of 772. She currently ranks as eighth in the world.</p>
<h2><br>Chasing a Record-Breaking Third Victory</h2>
<p>While Greya will not be competing at WEF9 this weekend, Kent Farrington has a different iron in the fire. He will be campaigning the ten-year-old Myla who has been showing great promise. She currently ranks as the fourth rated 10-year-old horse in the world. The competition will be fierce, however, with both the reigning Olympic Champion, Checker 47, and reigning World Champion, King Edward among the field this weekend.</p>
