<h2>Our main man is THE man</h2>
<p>If Ireland had to rely on one man in the RDS main arena, then Conor Swail and <strong>Count Me In</strong> are undoubtedly THE combination to call on. Two years ago, they were sent in Michael Blake with the responsibility of out-pacing a nation known for speed. The nation counted on Conor and they weren&rsquo;t disappointed. Today, the hosts have a small army to rely on, but this pair lead the charge on EquiRatings Prediction Centre and they have jumped clear in all three of their most recent rounds at 160 level.</p>
<p>Cian O&rsquo;Connor and the Dublin Horse Show are a go-to combination in this sport. He trains Max Wachman and produced Max&rsquo;s ride today, <strong>Kilkenny</strong>. In the 2022 Nations Cup win, Cian was the anchor for the team and delivered outstanding clears under pressure to make that jump-off possible. Kilkenny can perform in this arena and Max was 3rd in a 160 here 12 months ago. But Cian himself rides <strong>Fermoy </strong>and they could easily be the best of the Irish today, if not the outright winners. They jumped clear in the main arena yesterday and they were quick enough to pick up fourth place. A podium is within reach today if yesterday&rsquo;s effort hasn&rsquo;t left a mark.</p>
<h2>A Staut Double&hellip;?</h2>
<p>Kevin Staut and <strong>Beau De Laubry Z</strong> are the pre-competition favourites and they come here straight off the back of a monster five-star Grand Prix victory on home soil in Dinard. That win netted them a cheque for &euro;125,000 and it was a hard-fought victory. They&rsquo;ve had enough of a break to be fresh again for today&rsquo;s class and back-to-back five-star 160 wins is a real possibility.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Ben Maher kept his powder dry with Exit Remo yesterday, but he may be ready to unleash his original Olympic mount <strong>Point Break</strong> today. They have the second highest expected round one clear chance (56%) behind Conor Swail and Count Me In (57%). Ben and Point Break have already jumped 10 five-star 160 clears from just 18 career attempts.</p>
<p>McLain Ward took this class in 2019 and he lines up here with a formidable partner in <strong>Contagious</strong>. This horse is the highest rated in the class on the EquiRatings Elo (757) which measures the quality and consistency of opponents beaten. Despite being the top-rated today, Prediction Centre ranks him 5th as the Elo is actually on a downward trend. This horse was once rated in the top five in the World. Today presents a good opportunity to get the form back on track. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

Day Two in Dublin: Ireland Outperform Their Odds

<h2>Fast start for the hosts&hellip;?</h2>
<p>Paul O&rsquo;Shea won back-to-back editions, despite a two-year Covid gap, taking the win in both 2022 and 2019. The reigning champ, Shane Sweetnam, will be hoping to emulate his compatriot as he lines up here with the exciting Irandole Du Flot who makes a five-star 160 debut.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Darragh Kenny&rsquo;s Chic Chic has landed 2 clears from just 3 attempts when it comes to previous five-star 160 experience. A small sample size but an impressive start to this level. Darragh won this class back in 2018 with the impressive Balou Du Reventon and he&rsquo;ll be hoping that Chic Chic could follow in those illustrious hoofprints.</p>
<p>The EquiRatings Form Guide &lsquo;Hometown Hero&rsquo; selection is Conor Swail&rsquo;s Casturano. The Elo rating, tracking consistency as well as quality of performance, could be higher with his ranking at 16th in this competition based on that metric. But the rider is ruthlessly quick, as he demonstrated when providing the winning jump-off round in this arena against the French in the 2022 Aga Khan Nations Cup. Casturano has also produced three career clears at the five-star 160 level and should have the gears necessary to win if he can make it a fourth clear at the level here. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
<h2>The Overseas Threats</h2>
<p>Ben Maher likes an Olympic Gold medal having just his third one to his career tally for the team win in Paris. His horse Exit Remo is the highest rated in the competition and will take all the beating if his rider decides that it&rsquo;s game time. This could be a prep for bigger things to come later in the week, but all will become clear as he breaks the opening time beams.&nbsp;</p>
<p>On ratings, the overseas riders bring forward 7 of the 8 highest-rated horses in this Sport Ireland Classic, so there is a bit of choice when looking for the principle challengers to a home win. McLain Ward is another recent Olympic medalist finishing one spot behind Maher in the team competition and bringing home team silver. His ride here is another five-star 160 debutant in First Lady, but they are in hot form with four podium finishes in their last five competitions. Speed is this man&rsquo;s forte.</p>
<p>Swiss all-star Martin Fuchs brings forward another inexperienced horse in Bastille. But his form is solid with six clears in his last seven rounds at four and five-star shows. Another rider that is willing to take risks when it comes to the clock, so if he&rsquo;s clear and he&rsquo;s focused on victory, this could be another to set a fast time.</p>
<h2>VERDICT</h2>
<p>The overseas strength will make this a tough start for the home nation. Only one Irish flag is likely to make the podium in our opener.</p>

<p>There is no fan base more knowledgeable or passionate than the Irish when it comes to horse sports. While the performance data and predictive analytics from EquiRatings had the Irish team as narrow favourites, the wisdom of an Irish crowd didn&rsquo;t need the numbers to know that Michael Blake&rsquo;s team had a real shot at righting the wrongs of the equestrian history books.</p>
<p><br>The levels of excitement and anticipation pre-Paris were matched at the opposite end of the scale as the cruel openness and narrow margins of show jumping continued to deny Ireland its first team medal. As with any disappointment or setback, the full range of emotions hit before eventually being able to process and move on. Frustration and heartbreak were quick off the blocks, but the Dublin Horse Show sets the perfect stage to begin the healing and rebuilding process.</p>
<h3><br>Fallen favourites will need the Ballsbridge roar more than ever</h3>
<p>The enemy in show jumping is never the opponent, it&rsquo;s the 12ft pieces of wood that sit delicately poised to turn dreams into nightmares. The punishing nature of penalties in this game includes a cruel element of chance that can see one mistake accounted for while another gets away without reckoning.</p>
<p>The nature of horse sports brings another living variable which can create all sorts of unforeseen drama. No one will know this better than the current World Number One,&nbsp;<strong>Henrik von Eckermann</strong>, who returns to Dublin after a 10-year absence. Like the Irish team, he knows what it feels like to be a fallen favourite in the very literal sense of the phrase. His parting of company with King Edward in the individual final in Paris will have tested the resolve of any rider.</p>
<p>The simple maths of this sport is that many have real chances and only very few can take home the rewards. The result of that unfair equation is that most competitors walk away empty handed, but none will feel more disappointed than the home nation in Dublin this week. They will face stiff opposition from the newly crowned Olympic champions (GBR) as well as the silver (USA) and bronze (FRA) medalists. The World and European champions (SWE) won&rsquo;t make life easy either, and nor will the Belgians or Germans who both boast talent.</p>
<h3><br>Fancy new beginnings</h3>
<p>Many of us have heard and felt the sound of a home win in the Aga Khan Nations Cup or a home winner in the now Rolex sponsored Grand Prix of Dublin. It would be too easy and simple to reach the conclusion that we &lsquo;need&rsquo; one of those outcomes. The facts are that the odds will be against us, but we can still possess the firepower to dare to &lsquo;hope&rsquo; and there is every chance that Ireland will once again carry the burden of being pre-competition favourites when the EquiRatings numbers have been finalised on Friday morning.</p>
<p>The real value of the Dublin Horse Show 2024 is that it is step one on the long journeys towards Aachen 2026 (World Championships) and LA 2028 (Olympic Games). Ireland still searches for that long overdue first team medal and there will be combinations on show this week that will spearhead that mission over the coming years. One such combination will be the 4th highest rated nine year old in the world, <strong>Fancy De Kergane</strong>, for Cian O&rsquo;Connor. The pair have jumped five perfect clears in their last fine attempts at five-star 160 level. If anyone can break the decibel records in Ballsbridge this week, it could well be this pair.</p>

RDS Ready to Rally

<p><strong><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">King Edward</span></strong><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"> is a team gold medalist at the Olympic Games (2021) and World Championships (2022) where he was also crowned the individual World Champion. In the following years he added <em>two </em>World Cup Final victories to his CV. He surpassed Explosion W, the individual Olympic Champion in 2021, as the highest-rated horse in the sport since EquiRatings data analytics began in 2010. The opening chapters in the&nbsp;<strong><em>story</em></strong> of Paris 2024 were all about this hero being able to add an individual Olympic medal to his legacy. In all likelihood, that was his final shot. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">How that story ended couldn&rsquo;t have been more dramatic. The parting of company between the World Number One, Henrik Von Eckermann, and potentially the greatest horse of all-time, King Edward, wasn&rsquo;t the twist anyone saw coming. The eventual champion, Germany&rsquo;s Christian Kukuk, already a dual five-star winner this season with his mount Checker, was only a minor character in the first half of the story. But the question of whether or not Paris had a good ending or not is actually quite irrelevant. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">A story can have an incredible ending, but if only a small handful of people were really immersed in the story to begin with, the other few million that tune in to watch the ending won&rsquo;t really feel anything. The spectacle of Henrik and King Edward parting ways will be dramatic of course. The commentator will do their best to communicate the significance, but no matter how well you narrate the climax, it will fall on deaf ears if you didn&rsquo;t write the first half of the narrative.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">&nbsp; </span></span></p>

<p>The excitement from the team final still lingers. Many, myself included, are still processing the drama, intense competition and surprising outcomes. Sweden's failure to medal, the Dutch just missing out, and the Brit's near-perfect performance were all significant moments that will be discussed for a long time to come.</p>
<h3><strong>Today's Challenge</strong></h3>
<p>Today's qualifier is about strategy and precision. Riders will aim for a conservative, clear jumping round, mindful of the clock. A single rail down could be costly, so speed will be crucial if penalties occur. The goal is simple yet challenging: secure a place among the top 30 to advance to Tuesday's final.</p>
<p>As well as the usual prediction centre analysing win chances and medal chances, the EquiRatings data science team have used 50,000 simulations to analyse and rate each combination's chance of qualifying for the individual Olympic final tomorrow. The results has produced for us a simulated top 30 with all those below a 46% qualification chance, predicted to miss out. <p>One of the favourites for tomorrow's gold, Team Ireland, has actually never finished higher than 7th in the Jumping Olympic Team competition (&amp; that was way back in 1956). Their biggest rivals today are the defending champions and sports-dominating Swedes.</p>
<h2>Team Ireland&nbsp;<br>20% win chance&nbsp;</h2>
<p>Back in 1956, Team Ireland finished 7th in the Jumping Olympic Team competition in Stockholm. To this day, they have never finished higher in the Olympic team competition. It is time that changed.</p>
<p>The Irish team comfortably qualified for the final and will be entering as the favourites to win on a win chance of 20%. Our predictions also give them a 45% chance of winning their first-ever team medal.</p>
<h2><br>Team Sweden<br>18% win chance</h2>
<p>They are the defending champions. They hold current Olympic, World and European titles. Sweden has been synonymous with jumping success in recent years, a charge that has been led by the record-breaking equine athlete that is King Edward. But none of this would have been possible without the relentless dedication from the Swedish human athletes. A team with meticulous management, team spirit and horsemanship that knows how to get the best out of their horses on the days when it matters. Today, it matters more than ever.</p>
<p>They enter today's Team Final as second favourites on a win chance of 18% and 48% of bringing home a medal. Will the Swedish success story continue in Paris?</p>
<h2><br>Team USA<br>14% win chance</h2>
<p>Team USA have won the Team Silver at the last two Olympic Games and with the exhibition they showed in yesterday&rsquo;s qualifier, they have shown class and power enough to bid for the gold. It was in 2008 that the USA last won Team Gold in jumping. Two of those team members, McLain Ward &amp; Laura Kraut, are on the 2024 team to repeat that performance 16 years down the line. They are in good company, as reserve combination Karl Cook and Caracole de la Roque got a late call-up to replace Kent Farrington and Greya on the team. No problem for the pair, as they handled the pressure of the substitution with ease to produce a solid clear.</p>
<p>A solid team built from experience, class and form. They enter the Final as third favourites with a 14% win chance.</p>
<h2><br>Team Belgium<br>12% win chance</h2>
<p>The Belgians were brilliant in their Team Qualifier today. A team that has all the ingredients to succeed. With the highly experienced pair, Jerome Guery &amp; 18-year-old multi-medalist Quel Homme de Hus, the young sensations in Gilles Thomas &amp; Ermitage Kalone and the calm and collected Wilm Vermeir &amp; his IQ van het Steentje, the Belgians are a team not to be missed in the Final.</p>
<p>Despite winning the bronze medal at the last Olympics in Tokyo, it is absolutely incredible to say that Belgium has never won a Team Gold medal at the Jumping Olympics. As a matter of fact, the nation where equestrianism is almost ingrained in its culture has only ever medalled three times in the history of the Games. With a team like this, there is no better time to add another medal to that tally.</p>
<h2><br>Team Germany<br>11% win chance</h2>
<p>They were the eye-catchers in today's qualifier by being the only team finishing the competition on a zero score, with a 6 penalty margin over the USA. With flawless performances from Christian Kukuk &amp; Checker 47, Philipp Weishaupt &amp; Zineday and Richard Vogel &amp; United Touch S, the German team have shown they have the skill and precision it takes to deliver another gold medal performance</p>
<p>Germany has been steeped in history as the most successful nation in Olympic Team Jumping. With a whopping 14 medals, of which 8 gold, no nation in tomorrow's Team Final is more decorated.</p>

<h2><br>Team Mexico<br>2% win chance</h2>
<p>The Mexicans have found their momentum. After this charismatic and exciting team finished second in the Mercedes-Benz Nations Cup of Aachen, the Mexicans have continued to ride the wave of success. Despite a setback necessitating the reserve combination to step in, they have thrived under the pressure and against the odds qualified for the Team Final. Olympic debutante &amp; team pathfinder, Carlos Hank Guerreiro produced the best team score at just 24 years of age.</p>
<p>It's been 44 years since Mexico last graced the podium of a Jumping Olympic Team competition. Can they do it again?</p>

<p>Scott Brash&rsquo;s impeccable final round performance was a highlight, but credit must be given to Harry Charles and Ben Maher. Charles and his horse Romeo 88, despite recent injuries, showed immense determination in jumping a clear round, while Maher&rsquo;s strategic decision to ride Dallas Vegas Batilly instead of Point Break proved a positive. Those performances underscored the depth and resilience of the British team.</p>
<p>Ireland, a team many championed (including ourselves), faced a heart-breaking outcome. Despite Daniel Coyle and Legacy&rsquo;s flawless round, and Cian O'Connor&rsquo;s valiant effort, small errors proved costly. Shane Sweetnam and James Kann Cruz's time penalty and rail down at the last jump were particularly disheartening. Ireland&rsquo;s quest for a major championship team medal remains unfulfilled, leaving them with a bittersweet sense of what could have been. Sweden&rsquo;s King Edward, a usually reliable performer, had a rail down, dramatically lowering Sweden&rsquo;s chances. The Dutch team, despite superb performances, missed out on a medal by only half a second.</p>
